This week, Collin, Spencer and Jacob talk about The Lego Batman Movie!
The episode starts out with Spencer and Collin trying to understand the difference between this movie being gay “coded” or just blatant about it. They then argue about the Lego kits that were released because of this movie. We love each other on this show, honest.
Spencer points out how well this movie understands Batman, and Jacob appreciates how many villains from Batman’s rogues gallery.
Jacob and Collin talk for a while about the animation style of this movie. Jacob thinks this looks less stop motion than The Lego Movie, but Collin disagrees, he says this movie just has more smear frames.
Spencer states that this is the only acceptable time to ship Barbara Gordon and Bruce Wayne. Spencer also likes the voice acting, the actors do a great job selling their roles without overdoing it.
The boys had a few more thoughts, but you should listen to the episode to find out more! In the end, this movie is very funny. The boys really like this movie.
Jacob watched Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)!
After recapping the story as best he can (he’s not smart, but also, this is a bad movie), Jacob says that some of the points in the story could be cool (Blackbeard, mermaids, etc.) but so much of this movie is JUST. SO. BORING.
The humor isn’t funny, the grand set pieces are small or nonexistent. Jacob’s biggest complaint is that the story is chock full of pirates stabbing each other in the back. The ending has three backstabs in a row, and by that point Jacob just didn’t care, he wanted the movie to end.
Spencer’s one positive about this movie is that it is the reason why the banger Lego Pirates of the Caribbean game was released.
Jacob gave this movie three out of five stars.
Collin read Chainsaw Man Vol. 12-13 (and 14 but that’s his next talking point shhhh).
Collin mostly just recaps the story, which I refuse to do here. Point is, he likes these books a lot.
Spencer read all five editions of The Field Guide to Wonder, written and illustrated by Vero Stewart!
These are just like regular, boring field guides about birds or nature, but these zines are about anything that makes Vero happy! Spencer calls these adorable, they made him smile to himself often. These zines are composed of mixed media, including quotations and reader submissions.
Spencer thinks he got these for about $5 at the last convention he went to, and he’s very happy. He feels awful for putting these off for so long, and can not wait for the next one!
Jacob watched Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017).
After trying to recap the story (this one isn’t Jacob’s fault, this movie is stinky and nonsensical), Jacob has several complaints.
For every good shot, there’s a shot that looks like it’s straight out of The Flash. Jacob thought for sure in the opening scene that Orlando Bloom had been recast because his character looks so weird, but no it’s actually Orlando with some sort of de-aging effect. It looks bad!
Jacob calls this movie flat out awful, and extremely boring. The only positive thing he has to say is that Javier Bardem is playing his ass off, but the script is so poorly written there really isn’t much for Javier to do.
As soon as the movie started, Jacob could tell there was something different about Johnny Depp’s performance. Captain Jack Sparrow is always drunk in the movies, but Jacob wondered if Johnny was actually hammered for this movie’s performance and it turns out that there was a lot of problems behind the scenes because this was when everything fell apart for Johnny Depp and Amber Herd. Big oof.
Jacob gave this two and a half out of five stars. Very stinky, won’t watch again.
Collin read Chainsaw Man Vol. 14! Vol 15 hasn’t been released in English yet…
Collin recaps more story. Spencer and Collin then talk about how this series really walks the line of spoofing the cringe, gross mangas while mostly doing the same things as those mangas. They choose to believe this manga is good hearted about it’s spoof, not cringe and gross.
Spencer read Monuments to the Moon Gods #1!
This issue tickled the Star Trek fan inside Spencer’s brain. He really liked this issue, and only realized that Collin had already talked about this AFTER Spencer had read this issue.
The issue is fairly dense with the world building that is necessary for getting an epic sci-fi story rolling. Despite being exposition heavy, this book is coherent and quite enjoyable. Also, the artwork is fantastic!
Spencer got this at Jetpack for $5, and he plans to hop on the Kickstarter for issue 2 and beyond.
Speaking of money, Kaitlyn and Jeff Lorentz help keep this show rolling by giving us their hard earned money! They went to www.patreon.com/dimecomicbrosnetwork (we legally couldn’t make the URL any longer, we tried) and subscribed under one of the four tiers they found there. They get access to cool bonuses like the after show we record after almost every single episode, Happy Hour!
Jetpack employees are always happy. You should go there and witness it for yourself, they’re awesome! Jetpack Comics and Games is in Rochester, NH and they have any ingredients you may need to satisfy your desperate nerdy needs.
Next week Spencer and Jacob are going to bring you the comic news, tune in then!
